Apricots are closely related to the Peach family. This fleshy fruit with less juice than peaches is a rich source of beta-carotene and lycopene. Apricots have a velvet-like skin, it?s kernels resemble and tastes like Almonds, and are often used as a substitute for that nut.
Interestingly, not only the fruit, but its kernel as well, have cancer-fighting nutrients. In the kernels, it is Amygladin, while the fruit contains Lycopene. An Apricot can be consumed raw, in fruit salad, or even canned. Interestingly, canned apricots are relatively high in beta-carotene as compared to raw apricots.
Apricots are rich sources of potassium, manganese, and copper. Iron, magnesium, and phosphorus are also present in small amounts.
Traces of calcium and zinc are also found in the fruit.
Apricots are said to be loaded with vitamin A and vitamin C.
It is also enriched with vitamin E, vitamin K, niacin and vitamin B6.
Thiamin, riboflavin, folate, and pantothenic acid are present in small quantities.
Internal use
The kernels can be used internally for respiratory problems, bronchitis and dry constipation.
Apricot kernels are used in Chinese medicine (Xing Ren) to stop coughing and wheezing.
The fruits also have benefit in relieving constipation.
External use
The oil is used in cosmetics and the finely ground kernels are used as a fine exfoliating medium in fine cosmetic applications.
Aromatherapy and essential oil use
The apricot kernel oil extracted from the kernel is a nourishing and lubricating oil and very few people show an allergic reaction to this.
